Zenyatta wins the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic

Monday, November 9, 2009, By Joel Montgomery

In front of close to 60,000 fans on hand at Santa Anita to watch the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, Zenyatta which was ridden by jockey Mike Smith ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.62 and paid $7.60, $5.60 and $3.80 as the 5-2 odds on favorite to win. Gio Ponti returned $9.20 and $6.60, while Twice Over paid $7 to show.

There are tears coming to my eyes. I can't believe it," said trainer John Shirreffs, who eschewed a box seat to watch his star horse from the rail near the finish line.

Summer Bird came in fourth while Mine That Bird finished a disappointing 9th. Quality Road was scratched from the race following an incident at the starting gate.

American horses earned eight victories over the two-day championships, with Europe-based horses winning just six, one better than last year's total.
